The Berlin Wall - its history and its influence on the present

The Berlin Wall was the symbol of the division of Germany and the Cold War between East and West. On August 13, 1961, the GDR government had it set up to prevent fugitive citizens from leaving the country. The structure divided Berlin's streets and the lives of many families, whose relatives found themselves on different sides of the city. Between 1961 and 1989 at least 140 people were killed at the Berlin Wall or lost their lives in direct connection with the GDR border regime.
